We are very pleased to announce that Hua Hua Zhang’s company, Visual Expressions, will return to the Colonial to premiere its new show, East Meets West II: The Journey Continues with our audience, friends and family.
East Meets West II is a family-oriented production that will share Hua Hua’s ongoing life and art journey, especially as they relate to Hua Hua’s observations of Asian and Western culture. Music for this show will be composed by Chinese artist, Liang Liang. Some of the characters from the original production of East Meets West that appeared at the Colonial Theater last year — including Chung Kai, a shy Chinese boy and Pablo, a puppet designed based on Picasso style, will re-appear with new stories. Also, a new scarf puppet, similar by design in certain respects to the Witch, an audience favorite in East Meets West, will emerge as a boy, Gong Gong, with a curiosity to learn and who likes to show off his Kung foo and his music. Gong Gong is anxious to meet his audience!
Hua Hua has also created several new characters including Monkey King and Qi Ping Zhi Ma Gua; both famous characters from Chinese literature and mythology. Hua Hua will introduce those characters to our audience in a stylized performance common in Chinese Puppet Theater. Also, Moon and Earth is a Chinese legend that tells of the Woman in the Moon. She has to face a choice in her life. And Gui Zi, a crocodile is a Chinese pop singer who loves American music. The audience will be surprised and entertained to see how Gu Zi deals with a different language when he sings his songs. Finally, Do Do is a young child with a dream and a dilemma faced by too many children as his family, and thus his world, is in turmoil.
Hua Hua is excited to bring Visual Expression’s new show to the Colonial Theater. And, especially as this will be the premier performance of East Meets West II, Hua Hua would love to talk to the audience after the show and share her creative ideas with the audience and hear and learn their reaction to the show. Please join us at the Colonial Theater to meet Hua Hua Zhang and to be in the first audience to see the new production of East Meets West II!
The creation and production of East Meets West II was made possible by the generous support of The Ross Family Fund, Andrew Duvall, Jr. and Anita Duvall, and Brooks Eldredge Martin.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for kids and members of the Colonial. Tickets can be purchased at the Colonial box office with cash or check or, to use a credit card, please go to Click & Pledge.
