William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, The Princess Bride, etc.) adopted his own novel into one of the most exciting and clever films of the 1970s. Starring Dustin Hoffman, as a graduate student who lives to run (and whose family holds dark secrets) and Sir Laurence Olivier, as an escaped Nazi leader (who also had a past life as a horribly experimental dentist), this is a genuinely harrowing thriller. Olivier was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for this portrayal of true and unrelenting evil. Watch him interrogate Hoffman in a dentist’s chair and you’ll understand why. Filled with surprises and subtle wit, this film also does a beautiful job of photographing Manhattan and making such locations as Central Park, the Riverside Drive, and other landmarks into a visceral part of the action itself. Also starring Roy Scheider, at his most suave and dangerous, as Hoffman’s mysterious older brother, and William Devane, as a CIA man with secrets of his own, this is one thriller that more than lives up to it’s fine reputation.
