This one-of-a-kind masterpiece has, in many ways, greatly influenced all science-fiction films that have arrived in its wake. Concerned as much with the technology and innovation involved with space travel as with the human element (and many would say concerned more with technology than humanity), 2001 imagines several encounters that humankind has had with (never seen) aliens, from the dawn of man to the title year, when moon explorers find an alien artifact. This leads to a manned space mission to Jupiter, and many enigmatic and, at times, haunting sights and experiences. A visionary film, in every sense of the term, this is another movie-making epic that demands to be seen on the big screen. (NOTE: For what it’s worth, if you move up the position of each of the letters in the name of the renegade computer HAL, you get IBM. Just thought we’d give you a little something to think about.)
