What would a Bogart festival be without the inclusion of his signature role, that of Rick in the all-time classic, Casablanca. (And what could be a more romantic film to see on Valentine’s Day!) A perfect blend of witty, intelligent writing, superlative performances on all levels, and brilliant timing, Casablanca has earned its popularity many times over. Probably no script this side of Shakespeare has so many inspired and quotable lines, and nowhere can one find so many beautifully realized set-pieces. Amidst the intrigues of war-torn Morocco, two erstwhile lovers discover that “the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world,” as they commit themselves to a cause that is greater than any one person. This is a film that gets better every time you see it, and stirs all the right feelings for all the right reasons. And if this is the first time you will be seeing it, then “Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” (Bill Roth)
