Harvey

Directed by Henry Koster. US. 1950. NR. 104 min.

What better way to start off a month of James Stewart classics than to feature him in one of his most beloved roles, that of Elwood P. Dowd, in this delightful comedy/fantasy?  Elwood is a pleasant, gentle, gregarious inebriate with a very special friend, Harvey, who happens to be a six-foot-tall invisible rabbit. Oddly enough, some folks find this to be somewhat strange, especially his up-tight, social climbing family, who feel that he would be better off in a mental institution. And that’s when the fun really begins. Stewart’s hilarious, understated performance earned him an Oscar nomination and Josephine Hull, the lady who plays his distraught sister, received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. If you want to enjoy a genuinely happy and clever movie, this is the one. (Bill Roth)
