Madagasgar

Directed by Eric Darnell. US. 2005. PG. 86 min.

Sponsored by Wellsprings Congregation

Sit back and enjoy this spirited bit of animated whimsy, as four escapees from New York’s “luxurious” Central Park Zoo head into the wilds of Madagascar. Ben Stiller voices the part of Alex the Lion, a Manhattan show-biz type, and Chris Rock plays his introspective buddy, Marty the Zebra. They are joined by Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer), who is a genuine hypochondriac, and Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett-Smith), who doesn’t hesitate to throw her considerable weight around when necessary. Also along for the fun are a bunch of penguins, who consider themselves to be a crack commando squad, determined to escape from the zoo that they consider to be a prison-camp. And when our gang reaches the island of Madagascar, they have to deal with the dangers lurking there, including possible starvation and a wild and crazy group of lemurs, headed by King Julien XIII (voiced by a hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen, a.k.a. Ali G.) Filled with visual and musical gags galore (watch/listen for “Staying Alive” and the “Hawaii Five-O” theme), this is a hilarious animated film from Dreamworks with appeal for the whole family.
