The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

Directed by John Huston. US. 1948. NR. Running time: 126 min.

In this acting (and action!) tour-de force, Bogart, along with co-stars Walter Huston and Tim Holt, creates a fascinating, thought-provoking and often grimly humorous portrait of three down-and-out prospectors in Mexico, and the effects that gold and greed have upon them. Oscars went to writer/director John Huston and to his father, Walter, whose son gave him the role of a lifetime. But the most stunning performance is Bogart’s, as Fred C. Dobbs, whose descent into madness has to be seen to be believed. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a true masterpiece of storytelling. The ironic laughter at the end of this adventure will echo with you long after the film is over. Watch for a young Robert “Bobby” Blake as the persistent Mexican boy selling lottery tickets.
