The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starts on Saturday – the first screening is at 2PM. The Ghost Writer starts on May 21, Sweetgrass starts on May 28; City Island starts on Jun 4, and The Secret of Kells starts on Jun 18.
We’re planning a special film/book discussion of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Sunday, May 2 after the 4:15PM screening. The discussion will be led by Jason Hafer, owner of Wolfgang Books and myself. Depending on the size of the group we’ll either meet at Wolfgang’s or in the theatre’s new third floor community room. If you are not planning on attending the 4:15 screening, but would like to join the discussion meet us in the theatre lobby at about 6:45.
In last week’s email I mis-identified Nikki Milholin as being the discussion leader for Wolfgang’s literary fiction group. Nikki actually leads their poetry group, and she is hoping to participate in our discussion on Sunday. Kathy Hunt is the writer who leads the literary fiction group. My apologies for the mix-up!
On Wednesday at 7PM the Green Valleys Association presents a screening of the documentary A Chemical Reaction. A Q&A with one of the film’s producers, Paul Tukey, will follow and will take the place of our regular Wednesday night film discussion.
This month our classics theme is Bette vs. Joan (that’s Davis and Crawford). On Sunday at 2PM we get things started wtih a true classic noir, Mildred Pierce.
Parking update from Mary:
Some of you may have already heard about the upcoming parking changes in Phoenixville, but I thought I would share with you how this will work and how I think it will be a good first step towards addressing the parking issues in the borough.
Our business community has grown quite a bit in the last several years and like any small town community we were not built to accommodate the number of cars that people have come to depend on. Add to that the dearth of public transportation and you’ve got a real parking problem in Phoenixville. However, the last thing we want to do is discourage people from coming into town for dinner, drinks a movie or shopping.
In addition to the cars belonging to visitors coming in and out of town, we have identified quite a few cars in the municipal lots and on the street that never move. So the parking authority has made some changes that will take effect on May 3 and that will help manage the cars in town.
First, the three main municipal lots will be metered. Parking will be $1 an hour from 9am to 9pm. You can use a credit card to pay at the stations set up in each lot. There is no limit to how long you can stay in the spot as long as you pay. Second, the two-hour parking on Bridge Street between Starr and Gay Streets and on Gay and Main Streets between Bridge and Church will be strongly enforced. The parking in these spots is free but limited to two hours.Third, employee parking will be set up in the gravel lot across Main Street from the Foundry. You must have a current paid, permit to park in this lot. Fourth, the lot behind the Dollar Store will be set aside for resident parking and available to those who have a current, paid permit.
In the future, there may be some restricted, resident only parking on Church Street, but not at this time. Please respect the fact that people live on that street and need to park their cars too, so use the metered lots when you come in to town in the evenings. Think of it as supporting the parking plans for Phoenixville.
Ticketing update:
On Saturday our lowest ticket price ($4) will increase to $5. This is our first increase of the member/child ticket price in 10 years and we hope you will agree that it is still affordable. The first film to be affected by the increase is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Please note that this increase will also affect the films in the Young Audiences Series starting next October.
Thanks for your support and we’ll see you at the theatre!

Crazy Heart is staying until Apr 8. The Last Station starts on Apr 23 and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starts on May 1. We’re still working on what to bring in over the next two weeks. April is going to be a little lean on new feature films because we have lots of concerts and special events spread throughout the month and that impacts our film schedule. Please double check film days and times before you make the trek into town.
Tomorrow night is First Friday and we’re showing The Fly (1986) for our Fright Night show at 10PM. On our FB page, we threw out the idea of having a pre-screening meet-up at Iron Hill (our series sponsor). I’m shooting to get there around 9pm, but do come whenever you can.
Our Young Audiences show for this Saturday (2PM) is Charlotte’s Web (1973). Unfortunately, we were sent the 35mm print for the live action remake by mistake, so we will be showing the 1973 version on DVD.
There’s no classic film this week since we’re closed for Easter. Next Sunday we start paying tribute to the terrific baseball films that came out in the 1980s with Eight Men Out, at 2PM.
George Winston will be here on Wed, Apr 7 for a 7:30PM concert – his first at the Colonial. The Gold Circle is sold out, but there are still orchestra and balcony seats available.
Finally, we’re launching our own TEDx event here at the Colonial and we’ve begun posting some info about it on our website. Stay tuned!
Thanks for your support and we’ll see you at the theatre!

Good afternoon, Colonial Fans!
The Lovely Bones has its last screening tonight (Thursday) at 7:30PM. Crazy Heart starts tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30PM. April is going to be a little lean on new feature films because we have lots of concerts and special events spread throughout the month and that impacts our film schedule. Please double check film days and times before you make the trek into town.
Our Young Audiences show for this Saturday (2PM) is Billy Kelly performing his first concert at the Colonial. We’re expecting a fantastic show and are thrilled to welcome him to Pville! Listen to his song, People Really Like Milk, reviewed on NPR!
Our classic film this Sunday (2PM) is On the Waterfront (1954), rounding out our month of 1950’s Oscar contenders. Next month we pay tribute to the terrific baseball films that came out in the 1980s: Eight Men Out, Field of Dreams, and The Natural. Now, I must confess something — I had booked Bull Durham for Sun, Apr 4, not realizing when I did that it was Easter Sunday. We’ve always been closed for Easter and so I have canceled the booking. However, if I get an onslaught of pleas from you to reschedule it, I will. Let your voices be heard, Bull Durham fans!
Finally, we’re launching our own TEDx event here at the Colonial and we’ve begun posting some info about it on our website. Stay tuned!

We have two concerts this weekend: Two Funny Philly Guys on Friday night, which is sold out, and Entrain, Slo-Mo & Ben Arnold at 8PM on Saturday night. More info on that show is below.
We also have a silent film with live organ accompaniment on Sunday at 5PM. Help support the TOSDV Organ Restoration Fund by coming out to see Tillie’s Punctured Romance. Tickets are $10 and $5 for children 12 and under.
Our Young Audiences show for this Saturday (2PM) is Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1959) which has become quite a St. Patrick’s tradition for us. It’s a live action Disney classic from 1959 and stars a very young Sean Connery. Next week, we’re super excited to welcome Billy Kelly for his first concert at the Colonial. We’re expecting a fantastic show!
Our classic film this Sunday (2PM) is From Here to Eternity featuring a buff Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr tossing about on the beach. Next week we wrap our month of 1950’s Oscar contenders with On the Waterfront.

Good afternoon Colonial Fans!
A Single Man has its last screening tonight (Thursday) at 7:30PM. Broken Embraces, directed by Pedro Almodovar and starring Penelope Cruz, starts tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30. Crazy Heart starts on Mar 26.
FFFN Alert: We’re showing the 35mm print of Zombie tomorrow night at 10:10PM. Tom Whalen (the artist who designs our FFFN posters) won’t be here, but we will still have his Aliens (just a few left) and Zombie posters for sale for $10 each. Don’t forget we also have very cool, glow-in-the-dark FFFN t-shirts designed by Neo-Pangea for sale for only $15.
Our Young Audiences show for this Saturday is a collection of Looney Tunes cartoons featuring Foghorn Leghorn and friends, and the work of Chuck Jones. The list of cartoons is here. Show time is 2PM and tickets are $4. We had a pretty big turnout when we showed Looney Tunes last year, so you may want to buy your tickets in advance online, or come a little early to the show.
Our classic film this Sunday is one of the first classic films I remember seeing as a kid with my Dad, The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. I plan on bringing my daughter with me, although she’s a bit of a reluctant classic film viewer. (I must bend her to my will!) The film is appropriate for ages 8+.
I’ve added all of our kids and classic films through June to the website, so check it out when you have some time. There are some great films coming up!
Finally, I want to express our big, HUGE thanks to all the members who joined in February and helped us surpass our goal of signing up 100 members by March 1. Our members came out in high style for the Oscar party on Sunday night, and by the looks of things, everyone had a great time. I think the highlight of the evening was when The Blob and the Colonial marquee showed up (twice!) in the horror film montage during the Oscar ceremony. Our audience gave a collective, enthusiastic cheer. It was a great, spontaneous moment! Here’s the montage on YouTube, although it’s poor quality. The Blob shows up at about 4:04 and 4:49.

On Sunday at 2PM we wrap up our Bogart month with The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), directed by John Huston.

The thought of parking in the borough may have you flummoxed, but fear not! The word on the street is that the Justice Center parking lot (just west of Bridge & Gay) is clear and patrons may park there for the evening screenings. Similarly the Phoenix Federal lot on Main Street is clear, as is the Baptist Church lot on Church & Gay. The borough has been busy clearing as many blocks as they can, so things are definitely improving.

I also confirmed that this is the week that Hua Hua will teach an arts camp here at the theatre (Jul 26 – 30). Details will follow asap. The Young Victoria is staying with us for another week. Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend are lovely to watch as the idealistic and righteous Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Next up: Invictus starting on Jan 29, Up in the Air starting on Feb 5, and the Oscar Nominated Short Films starting on Feb 19.
On Saturday at 2PM we’re showing Pride and Prejudice (2005) starring Kiera Knightly. Then, on Sunday at 2PM we’ve got one of the best dance films of all time, West Side Story (1961).
Last night Tom Whalen (strongstuff.net) dropped off a large version of his Aliens poster and it is brilliant! Come check it out in our poster case on Bridge Street. We’ll have prints (11×17) available at the Aliens screening (Feb 5 at 9:45PM) for $10 and Tom will be on hand to sign them!

Robb Reiner and Steve Kudlow, of the Canadian heavy-metal band Anvil.
In the immortal words of David St. Hubbins, “tonight we’re going to rock you tonight!” Drown your sorrows about the Phillies at our It Goes to 11 Double Feature. Starting at 7:30PM we’re showing Anvil: The Story of Anvil followed by This is Spinal Tap. If you need some convincing to come see these two timeless rockumentaries, check out the glowing reviews here and here. My fav is Anthony Lane’s review of Anvil in The New Yorker.

The SOLD OUT Blue Oyster Cult concert is tomorrow (Friday) night. When a show has sold out, rush tickets, the remaining seats in the upper balcony, go on sale after the performance has started. Patrons are encouraged to arrive 45 minutes in advance of the performance to queue up. After the show has started and all of our ticket holders are in and seated, we will evaluate how many seats are open in the upper balcony and those seats will be made available on a first come, first served basis. Please note that leg room is limited in these seats. Rush tickets are priced the same as balcony tickets for that show, in this case $29.50. We accept cash only at the box office for rush tickets.
