The last screening of Hunger is tonight at 7:30PM. Tomorrow night (Friday) we start a TWO week run of Goodbye Solo. It’s also First Friday Fright Night and to get ourselves in the proper kitschy state-of-mind for BlobFest, we’re showing an Ed Wood Double Feature - Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 from Outer Space! Show time is 9:45PM.

Our classic film on Sunday at 2PM is 4-D Man (1959), the first of our Filmed in Phoenixville series this month. 4-D Man was directed by Shorty Yeaworth (The Blob) and we’re very lucky to have Shorty’s son, Kris, in the area. Kris will be here on Sunday with props and photos and to introduce the film.

BlobFest is next weekend (Jul 10 -12) and tickets are available for advance purchase online, but through 5PM on Thu, Jul 9 only. After that, you will need to come to the box office to buy your tickets with cash only.

Our Children’s Summer Series gets underway next week with a performance by the fabulous Cat’s Pajamas on Tue, Jul 7 at 10:30AM. They’ll have whisker painting and tattoos aplenty to help kick off the series. Tickets are just $5 per person.

The last screening of Star Trek is tonight at 7:30PM. Tomorrow night (Friday) we’ve got the Jake Shimabukuro concert at 8PM. Our next film is the BBC-produced and Disney-released Earth beginning on Saturday. Please note that there will be no matinee screening of Earth on Wednesday because of the Cowboy Junkies concert that evening at 7:30PM.

Tickets for Jake Shimabukuro on Friday and Cowboy Junkies on Wednesday are still available. Both promise to be amazing shows!

On Sunday at 2PM we start our month of Movies to See with Dad with a Three Stooges show. We’re showing Have Rocket, Will Travel; Where’s Our Mummy? and Spook Louder. The show is being presented by Danny Atkinson — a huge Stooges AND Colonial fan!

I’m getting pretty excited about the Lord of the Rings Marathon! We’re showing all three films on 35mm starting at 10AM on Sun, Jun 21. Advance tickets are available and recommended. The website upgrade is complete (well, almost). There are a few more details we’re taking care of behind the scenes, but the hard part is over. You likely won’t notice much of a change — which is a good thing. The upgrade was more about the background architecture than the GUI. One thing that you will notice and that many of you have been asking for is that now you can click on the “Zoom” button on the event calendar (which is along the right hand side of each page) and get a full month view at a time! You can also subscribe to the calendar’s RSS feed to it will automatically update your iCal, or Google calendar or whatever tool you use. We will have instructions on how to do that coming shortly.

One last programming note — the Bacon Brothers are coming back! They will be here with their band on Saturday, October 10 to perform their third benefit concert for us and The French and Pickering Creeks Conservation Trust!

I've been working with some 7th grade volunteers from the Phoenixville Area Middle School to develop a survey about students' media use in general, and their use of the Colonial Theatre in particular. We used a survey created by Common Sense Media as the basis of this project and added our own specific questions about the Colonial. A parent survey is available as well, through Common Sense Media (the parent survey does not include questions specifically about the Colonial). Links to both are below.

I expect the survey results will provide enlightening, and surprising, information about how the media fits into students' lives, and how the Colonial does, or does not, fit into that media life. The future preservation of the Colonial depends on cultivating audiences who want to connect, participate, and contribute to the Colonial. The more we know our audiences and can meet their needs, the stronger our future will be. So, thank you in advance for helping us plan for our future!

Tomorrow (Friday) we start a run of Gomorrah (above), the gritty Italian mafia film that won the Grand Prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. Shall We Kiss?, a French romance (well, sort of!), starts on Friday, May 22.

Pray the Devil Back to Hell has its last screening tonight at 7:30PM.

We continue our month of classics to see with Mom on Sunday at 2PM with The African Queen (1951) starring Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and directed by John Huston. It's a wonderful movie and is absolutely appropriate for ages 8 and up. I've only seen it once — with my Dad when I was about 10 years old, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again, this time on the big screen. We're also fortunate to have a rare restored print of the film, so do join us!

The very well reviewed documentary, Pray the Devil Back to Hell (above), starts tomorrow, Friday, at 7:30PM. It traces the extraordinary efforts of Liberia's women (both Muslim and Christian) to end the brutal civil war between dictator Charles Taylor's government and the rural rebel forces that sought his downfall in 2003. Please note that there will be no screenings on Wednesday, May 13 due to the Dickey Betts concert. On May 15 we start a run of Gomorrah, the gritty Italian mafia film that won the Grand Prize at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
